Quick guide to properly fitting footwear
Key Fitting Rules
Length
- Leave ½ inch (thumb’s width) between your longest toe and the shoe’s end
- Your longest toe isn’t always your big toe!
Width
- The widest part of your foot should align with the widest part of the shoe
- Your toes shouldn’t feel squeezed or cramped
- The shoe’s flex point should match where your foot naturally bends
Measuring Tips
- Stand up when measuring — feet expand under your body weight
- Measure both feet — one is often slightly larger; fit to the larger foot
- Measure at the end of the day when feet are at their largest
- Wear the socks you’ll use with those shoes
Fit Check
- Heel should be snug but not tight (minimal slipping when walking)
- Ball of foot should sit comfortably in the widest part of the shoe
- You should be able to wiggle your toes freely
- No pinching, rubbing, or pressure points
Common Mistakes
- Don’t assume shoes will “stretch to fit” — they should fit well from the start
- Don’t rely solely on your “usual size” — sizing varies between brands
- Always try on both shoes and walk around
